Top Personal Trainer Certifications

The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and the Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) are two of the most well-known and respected organizations that certify personal trainers. Having a personal trainer certification from a top program is an important step towards a rewarding career as a fitness professional. In order to maintain your certifications with NASM or AFAA, you must take continuing education units (CEUs) to meet the renewal requirements every 2 years.

You must show proof of Continuing Education

After you complete your fitness CEU course, you will need to show proof to NASM or AFAA to get credit for the renewal of your certification. Information about the recertification process and how to renew is below.

How to Recertify Your Top Personal Trainer Certifications

Submit to the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)

NASM has an online portal for you to use during the recertification process. The NASM portal works best with Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, so check which browser you are using before you begin.

Step-by-step instructions for submitting a course for CEU credit with NASM:

  1. Log into your NASM account and click “Re-certification” on the bottom
    right-hand corner of the screen.
  2. To add CEUs, click “My CEUs” on the left menu screen.
  3. To add one of our courses, select “Add Provider/Petition CEUs” and look for 1st Choice Personal Training Online CEU’s.
  4. Select the name of the course that you took.
  5. After the information has been entered, there will be an area that asks for documentation. Click “Select file” and upload your certificate of completion. Then, click “Add and Save CEUs.”
  6. After you’re done adding all of your courses, click “Renewal” on the left screen menu and make your renewal payment (if applicable).
    (If you have previously purchased Recertify for Life, you do not need to make a payment. In this case, you will see that the ‘Certify for Life’ option is grayed out to prevent you from accidentally purchasing the product again.)

Submit to the Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA)

To recertify with AFAA, you will need to complete the renewal application and submit proof of the documents that verify your CEU completions along with your payment by mail or email.

Step-by-step instructions for submitting a course for CEU credit with AFAA:

  1. Complete the correct renewal application.
  2. Make the renewal payment (unless you have previously purchased Recertify for Life).
  3. Submit your documentation by mail or email.
